The ancient woodworking skills used to make Echizen Lacquerware
This started in the 6th century when Japanese Emperor Keitai ordered a lacquer artisan to repair his crown. The artisan fixed his crown but also made the prince a black glazed lacquer bowl. The prince was so moved by its beauty he encouraged lacquerware manufacturing in the village.
